Jennings Hospital Provides Care for Regional Patients Due to Hurricane Gustov
09/04/08

The Jennings hospital has remained open, accepting patients throughout Hurricane Gustav.  Four intensive care patients from Baton Rouge General Hospital were transferred to Jennings American Legion Hospital on Tuesday evening due to a power outage affecting the Baton Rouge hospital.  In fact, a hospital spokesperson said three of the four patients were originally from New Orleans, were transferred to Baton Rouge, and then to the Jennings Hospital when the Baton Rouge hospital lost power.

“We didn’t experience any power outages or severe weather, so we’ve been able to assist other healthcare providers as much as possible,” said Darlene Hesse, Chief Nursing Officer at JALH. “With the exception of a brief period of diversion as we were monitoring the weather, no services were suspended here during the time of the storm.  We’ve seen many patients in our Emergency Department from neighboring communities due to the storm. Healthcare needs don’t stop during a hurricane, and we’re glad to be a resource for people in our community and even those beyond our usual service area.”  Hesse reports that elective surgeries and outpatient procedures that were planned to be done during Hurricane Gustav have been rescheduled to a time that is convenient for the patients.
