In 1952 community leaders and physicians practicing in Jennings recognized the need for a hospital in Jennings. In response to this need the members of James O. Hall Post 19, American Legion bought the first hospital building, "The Shirley Clinic," located on Plaquemine Street, from Dr. Louis Shirley, Sr. The American Legion membership committed to establishing and operating an acute care hospital, and to this end the present hospital building was dedicated and became fully operational in December 1960.

Today, after numerous expansion, renovation and modernization projects, JALH continues to provide quality healthcare services on the same site that was dedicated to that purpose in 1960. The staff of the hospital strives to continuously improve services to meet the needs of the people of Jennings and surrounding communities. And the commitment of the membership of James O. Hall, Post 19, American Legion continues.

Jennings American Legion Hospital strives each and every day to provide the residents of Jennings and the surrounding areas advanced big city services wrapped into a small-town, friendly atmosphere. JALH is moving into the 21st Century by changing the way business is done with both doctors and hospitals. Our latest additions, the 24,000-square ft. Medical Office Building and the 32,000 square foot Patient Tower, are geared toward helping patients get the best possible care, all in the same facility.

In recent years, the hospital has made a commitment to local patients to put their needs first in an effort to provide the latest technology, procedures, and treatments, right here in Jennings. Those efforts have included a new obstetrics wing, emergency room, admissions offices, business offices and lobby and the renovation of surgical suites and the radiology department.

The Patient Tower is our most recent visible testament to our commitment to serving our community. Over the past few years we have experienced tremendous growth in numbers of inpatients, outpatients, and surgical cases. To meet that demand the Patient Tower, a freestanding 3-story building located in front of the existing hospital building, was constructed to replace aging inpatient beds originally opened in 1960. The $4.8 million project increased the hospital's inpatient licensed bed capacity to 60.

In addition, it is a testament to the community's commitment to the hospital as well. Local and area residents and businesses contributed over $300,000 towards the purchase of furnishings and equipment used in the Patient Tower. Donors are recognized by the placement of plaques on the doors to patient rooms in the new tower.
